About Chef

Nepali Chef Basanta Rai has become one of the six winners at the seventh edition of the Washoku World Challenge — a Japanese cooking contest for non-Japanese chefs across the world. He is the second chef from Nepal after Chef Santosh Shah to shine in the international culinary scene within months of each other. With over 20 years of experience in culinary field, Chef Basanta have mastered the art of making Japanese cuisines. In those days he have worked for many multinational and 5 stars hotel in different part of the world including UAE and Malaysia.

Message from the Chef

Ohayo Sushi specializes in flourishing the Sushi culture in Nepal. We provide an international standard, fusing traditional techniques with a modern touch to prepare the best bite of Sushi every time. We are committed to developing a global diversity with local culture. At Ohayo Sushi, our mission is to provide quality training, from quality of taste to the art of presentation. In the last 2 years, we welcomed over 2000 students, now Sushi masters. While some just loved the art of Sushi making, most are currently flourishing in related fields both within Nepal and internationally. Being a Chef, it’s important to have knowledge about cuisine, the food culture, fundamental cooking principles and authentic ingredients. Ohayo Sushi always welcomes interested individuals from over the world to learn quality Sushi making with skilled guidance and specialized product knowledge.

Achievement and Awards
In the online contest organised by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Chef Rai made it to the Top 6 on December 29, 2020. When the event’s finale, scheduled to be held in Tokyo on February 20 and 21, got cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisers declared all the top six finalists as the winners for this edition of the contest, making Chef Rai one of the winners, as per an official notice published on the website of the Washoku World Challenge. The competition saw participation of 199 chefs from 40 countries. Rai was the only Nepali chef to participate in the contest.
